Playroom for a Toddler: Small Playroom Ideas for Optimal Space-Saving and Montessori-Styled

small playroom ideas

Running out of space!? Kids consume so much of the home, from toys to clothes and everything in between. Stuff just accumulates. If you have a spare room or even a little corner in the house, I would highly recommend converting into a play area for your kids to maintain your sanity. We converted our spare room into a toddler playroom and it is now my favorite part of the apartment. Before the playroom, we had toys in the living room, the kitchen, the bathrooms, and our bedrooms. I was tripping and stepping over toys. I had enough. I donated toys she outgrew and organized everything else. I incorporated a Montessori style playroom. Each wall/corner has a theme; the reading corner, the kitchen, the art corner, the baby corner, and the everything else area. She is able to play with any toy and remembers where they belong, so she can keep the space clean. The playroom encourages independence and creativity. I am a huge fan!

Reading Corner

Our favorite corner. I added deep bookshelves so there is enough space to add new books. A basket full of blankets to get cozy on a beanbag and open a book. Some of the bean bags are filled with plushies, which helps with space saving. Alphabet decals and educational cards with double sided velcro for easy replacing. This corner is light and fun, and encourages learning. She loves sitting here with a book and pointing out the letters.

Kitchen

Her kitchen looks better than mine. I think the window over the sink makes it feel more real. When the light from the window hits the mirror, the room becomes brighter. She has all of her kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and food stored in the four cabinets within the kitchen. She also has her Target cart, which holds more food (from all of her Target shopping of course). This is a fun area in the room. She loves having her own personal sink, which is not only used for washing hands or dishes, but also for bathing her baby dolls. Love the creativity!

Art Corner

Somewhere in your home, there should always be an art area. All kids love ART. They love to color, paint, or even play with Playdough. All of which are great activities to enhance fine motor skills! Our art table is from Etsy, but I know Pottery Barn has similar tables as well. If the tables are too expensive, opt for a regular toddler table from Walmart or Amazon, but buy a bin to store all the art supplies or add shelving for storage. Find a way to also showcase their art work, even if it's on the fridge! This will excite them and increase confidence.

Everything Else

Even our dog seems to like this room. In the corner, on the right side of this wall, is where we have her baby dolls and the crib. We have her Barbie dolls and accessories in the basket to the left of the storage unit. In the storage unit is where we keep her educational books (LeapFrogs), puzzles, and other pretty random toys. One basket is full of Hot Wheel cars, another basket stores her puzzles and doctor kit, and the last basket holds her miscellaneous toys, such as figurines and Diplo legos. This area is a little less organized with a theme, but every toy has a home and she knows where everything goes.

Whether you have a spare room to convert or a corner in your apartment, there are so many space saving ideas to incorporate in your home. If you're low on floor space, how could you add shelving to help store items? Cubbies are great because they can hold so much. You mix and match baskets or remove them all together. Whatever your style is, make this area fun for you and your littles.

I want her to have fun in this room, but I also want her to learn to clean up after herself. Having all of her toys/things organized in this room has helped keep the rest of the apartment tidy. And I couldn't love it more!
